Without these visual cues, such as during announcements of airline gate numbers "B1" and "D1" at an airport, "B" may be confused with "D" by the listener. For example, lips are closed at the start of saying the letter "B" but open at the beginning of the letter "D" making these otherwise similar-sounding letters more easily discriminated when looking at the speaker. Also, the lack of visual cues during oral communication can cause confusion. The lack of high frequencies on standard telephones makes it hard to distinguish an 'F' from an 'S' for example. It is used to spell out words when speaking to someone not able to see the speaker, or when the audio channel is not clear. Should an efficient American secretary, for example, know several alphabets-one for use on the telephone, another to talk to the telegraph operator, another to call the police, and still another for civil defense? Įach word in the spelling alphabet typically replaces the name of the letter with which it starts ( acrophony). ![]() Often, each communications company and each branch of each country's military developed its own spelling alphabet, with the result that one 1959 research effort documented a full 203 different spelling alphabets, comprising 1600 different words, leading the author of the report to ask: These can be difficult to discriminate, particularly over a limited-bandwidth and noisy communications channel, hence the use in aviation and by armed services of unambiguous substitute names for use in electrical voice communication such as telephone and radio.Ī large number of spelling alphabets have been developed over the past century, with the first ones being used to overcome problems with the early wired telephone networks, and the later ones being focused on wireless two-way radio (radiotelephony) links. The names of the letters of the English alphabet are "a", "bee", "cee", "dee", "e", etc. A spelling alphabet is also often called a phonetic alphabet, especially by amateur radio enthusiasts, recreational sailors in the US and Australia, and NATO military organizations, despite this usage of the term producing a naming collision with the usage of the same phrase in phonetics to mean a notation used for phonetic transcription or phonetic spelling, such as the International Phonetic Alphabet, which is used to indicate the sounds of human speech. These synonyms include spelling alphabet, word-spelling alphabet, voice procedure alphabet, radio alphabet, radiotelephony alphabet, telephone alphabet, and telephony alphabet. Spelling alphabets are called by various names, according to context. Spelling alphabets also exist for Greek and for Russian. Today the most widely known spelling alphabet is the ICAO International Radiotelephony Spelling Alphabet, also known as the NATO phonetic alphabet, which is used for Roman letters. International air travel created a need for a worldwide standard. Many (loosely or strictly) standardized spelling alphabets exist, mostly owing to historical siloization, where each organization simply created its own. However, to gain the advantages of standardization in contexts involving trained persons, a standard version can be convened by an organization. For example, it is common to hear a nonce form like "A as in 'apple', D as in 'dog', P as in 'paper'" over the telephone in customer support contexts. For example, in the Latin alphabet, the letters B, P, and D ("bee", "pee" and "dee") sound similar and could easily be confused, but the words "bravo", "papa" and "delta" sound completely different, making confusion unlikely.Īny suitable words can be used in the moment, making this form of communication easy even for people not trained on any particular standardized spelling alphabet. This avoids any confusion that could easily otherwise result from the names of letters that sound similar, except for some small difference easily missed or easily degraded by the imperfect sound quality of the apparatus. The words chosen to represent the letters sound sufficiently different from each other to clearly differentiate them. A spelling alphabet ( also called by various other names) is a set of words used to represent the letters of an alphabet in oral communication, especially over a two-way radio or telephone.

Perhaps Mr Minx and I should make it a point to try at least a couple of these places in 2010. I suppose these omissions from my list of Places in Which I Have Dined makes me a bad local foodie, but sometimes the budget only allows for a burger at the Nautilus. Places on the list I'd like to visit eventually: The Brewer's Art, Chameleon Cafe, Mari Luna Latin Grill, Woodberry Kitchen, Jack's Bistro, Peter's Inn. Why this place isn't in the top 20, I don't know. Tio Pepe, at 40, obviously serves much better food when it's not Restaurant Week.Īnd Roy's is ranked at 49? You're kidding, right? The food is always well-executed, service is nearly perfect - formal, but always friendly, the ambiance makes me feel warm and happy no matter what time of year we visit, and the prices are not stratospheric. For a place with such snazzy decor, I expect impeccable service. Servers reached across the table to place plates, didn't know who ordered what, and made us wait for clean silverware after our second course was served (I suspect they wanted us to lick our app utensils clean and use them again for the entrée). Not that we weren't promptly served, water glasses refilled, etc., but it was sloppy. In our most recent dining experience, the food was decent enough, but the service was lousy. We had dinner there a few weeks ago, and have eaten there in the past, and none of the meals would elevate the place to a "best of" anything list. I'm also going to have to disagree with Gertrudes, ranked at 39. And who can top a giant tree in the center of the restaurant for ambiance? I also think Della Notte deserves better than the 38th position everything I have ever eaten there has been excellent. ![]() I've had more consistently good food there than at the #12-ranked Petit Louis. But my one experience at Charleston left me feeling that the place was highly overrated and I have not been offered any free meals there to make me change my mind. It's always interesting to see if any new joints have made it onto the hallowed list of old favorites, and with the closing of Ixia and The Brass Elephant in 2009, there are at least two spots available for some new places to sneak in. The issue of Baltimore Magazine that features their list of Baltimore's 50 Best Restaurants is usually my favorite issue. ![]() The SideKick Sport was a short (three year) production run, as compared to the earlier SideKick (nine years) and the later Vitara (six years) and was a more expensive, less popular vehicle than the SideKick - because of this, there are less after market parts for it, and locating parts will certainly be more challenging - you may find yourself at the mercy of the dealer. All of these procedures were intended to expel corrupted humors from the body and to keep black bile, known as melancholia, from dominating the body. Plague doctors recognized that buboes tended to form in the groin, armpits and neck, and saw them as evidence of the body expelling humors from the nearest major organs: the liver, heart and brain, respectively.Īccording to these doctors, plague could be prevented by strengthening the humors or keeping them in balance through a detailed medical plan or regimen, including changes in diet, taking drugs that caused "beneficial" vomiting and urination, and prophylactic bloodletting. Using ancient and medieval medical theories, plague doctors argued that the Black Death was a pestilential fever that corrupted the humors, causing horrific plague buboes, or lymph nodes swollen with blood and pus. In both Europe and the Middle East this meant defining the plague in terms of the theory of four bodily humors (blood, phlegm, yellow bile, black bile), first developed by the ancient physicians Hippocrates and Galen and further explained by Arabic and Latin physicians in the middle ages. ![]() (Image credit: Wellcome Collection (CC BY 4.0))Īfter the outbreak of the Black Death, doctors and scientists immediately tried to fit the disease into their existing understanding of medicine. ![]() Gentile da Foligno from Bologna, Italy, died of the plague in 1348, after writing several casebooks on the subject.Ī 20th century watercolor of an 18th century physician wearing a plague preventive costume. Plague prevention and care came from college-trained physicians, surgeons, barbers, apothecaries, midwives, herbalists and priests. Ideas about the cause and spread of plague changed over several centuries, as did the clothing worn by plague doctors and the methods they used to treat the disease. Physicians of the later medieval and early modern periods aren't represented by a single outfit. Without more informative written reports and images from this period, which can help us understand under what circumstances the outfit was used, it is impossible to tell which came first: the plague doctor's protective outfit, or the carnival costume. In fact, some historians have argued that the beaked plague doctor was nothing but a fictional and comedic character at first, and that the theatrical version inspired genuine doctors to use the costume during the outbreaks of 16. The plague doctor getup, and especially the beaked mask, has become one of the most popular costumes in the "Carnevale," or Carnival of Venice in Italy. The engravings of Altzenbach and Fürst may also have inspired the inclusion of the plague doctor, or "Medico della Peste" in Italian, as a standard character in theatres since the 17th century. These elements are satirical and not a historical reality, but they have nonetheless shaped much of how the stereotypical plague doctor is pictured today.
